YOUNG MAN

$25.00

98 in stock

The story’s protagonist, a young man brought into being by screenwriter Marcus Khoudair, journeys from the mundane and disillusioned life of a young adult to the beautiful and intriguing through a cycle of childlike rediscovery of self and the outside world. Through a new illustrated visual language of time, sound and space devised by student of architecture and illustrator Ethan Scotney.

Young Man challenges its audience to make sense of the protagonist’s internal world of thoughts and associations. To move through feeling overwhelmed at the richness, density, and interrelationship of every sensory encounter in daily life. It challenges them to build empathy through extreme observation. These combined challenges fill the place of conventional narrative, where the audience is invited to imagine rather than comprehend.

The Journey

The journey of Young Man began after Ethan and Marcus met at a party in late November 2023. They exchanged work and saw each other’s creative potential, and within a week or two, they were meeting for coffee to discuss the script Marcus had been working on before they met.

Later, during meetings and illustration experiments, the visual language was defined. We settled on a language of form and sound inspired by Ethan’s architectural background and their shared love for music and rhythm. In the process, pointed out by Marcus, we inadvertently created what they would later speculate as a new storyboarding methodology.
In his spare time between studying and working as a cook, Ethan pencilled and inked each section of the comic. Using a fountain pen (black Take-sumi ink) and ink brush (zig black comic ink). His own kitchen experiences making their way into the comic as well.

In 2024 Marcus and Ethan would finally see the fruits of their work. It was something truly awe-inspiring to feel the weight of the full installation as it sat there laid out along the table.

After the work was completed in mid-2024 all 34 A3 pages and digitally cleaned up for final printing of the full installation and layout of the book.

The book creation process was a whole new experience, with paper samples being gathered and test-proof samples created by Bambra in Victoria, Australia, looked over, edited, and refined. Self-publishing, distribution, and marketing were new challenges to overcome. However it has, and still is a great learning experience. Marcus and Ethan would finally see the fruits of their work. Feeling the weight of the full installation as it lay out along the table was truly awe-inspiring
